Black & White, Cinematic series
A cinematic study of what remains when colour, text and narrator fall away.

Black & White began with a question we asked ourselves, not a client: how much story can imagery carry on light, material and composition alone? By removing every familiar device, what truly sets 3D cinematics apart from a render became visible. The series has been our internal benchmark for cinematic lighting ever since.
The challenge
A cinematic series in which light, material and composition carry the story on their own, no colour, no text, no narrator.
Visual strategy
Fully black and white. Cinema-oriented camerawork and lens optics. Lighting as the lead character. Composition strictly informed by classic film noir and modern architectural photography.
Impact
A test series that shows what 3D cinematics can do when all traditional means are cut away for a moment, and what remains.

— notes
Sometimes it is more valuable to take something away than to add something. For this cinematic study we removed colour, removed narration, removed dialogue, and kept what 3D does best: letting light do what it does, and being able to steer it down to the detail.
It became a study in cinematic lighting: how a space changes when the sun sits at a slightly different height, how material responds to soft versus hard light sources, how a seemingly simple image becomes dramatic through a single compositional choice.
The work has become an internal reference for our cinematics practice and illustrates the difference between a render and an image.
